Two Sham Shakes

Like many people of my generation, I ate food from McDonald’s on occasion. I can’t remember the last time I darkened the door of a McDonald’s … probably some time in high school. But I do remember well my mother getting us “Shamrock Shakes” each spring when they were available. Here’s the nutritional information on the famous green shake.

The first problem you’ll notice with the original is that it contains no alcohol whatsoever. Someone designed a beverage and left out the nutritional goodness of tasty alcohol. And cow’s milk, though the main ingredient in most shakes, is repulsive. (Its production also involves unspeakable cruelty.)

Mark Bittman recently swore off the deadly poison and feels much better for it.

Besides, who needs dairy milk when you have access to coconuts?

I created the “Sham Shake” as a delicious, boozy, vegan take on the original. It’s easy to make and better than the real thing. Here’s all you need to make two of these beauties: one pint plain coconut-milk ice cream, half a can of coconut milk, three ounces Branca Menta, and four drops green food coloring (what can I say, the nostalgic part of me wanted it to be green). Blend it up. Adjust the ratios to get the texture you like. If you want to go all the way, you can top it with vegan whipped cream and a Luxardo maraschino cherry.

It’s not just alcohol that makes this a grown-up shake. The Branca Menta provides more than just minty flavor, it gives layers of subtle earthier flavor, too, really deepening the drink.

If you want a treat for St. Patrick’s Day, try one of these. Sláinte!
